Describe How Strategic Management is Adaptive

The methods managers use to create and carry out strategies are known as modes of strategic management. They deal with the questions of who has the most sway over the strategic management process and how it is run. Entrepreneurial, adaptive, and planned are the three main methods to strategic management that managers typically employ.

Adaptive Mode: This method of formulating strategies stresses taking tiny, incremental actions in response to issues rather than looking for chances and making an effort to appease various organizational power groups. Thus, some well-known characteristics that define the adaptable mode include:

  • Instead of creating long-term strategies, the emphasis is on resolving pressing issues.
  • The CEO tries to take a reactive stance toward issues rather than confronting them head-on in a strong fashion.
  • Managers at established companies who are dealing with a fast-changing environment and multiple alliances or power blocs that make it challenging to come to a consensus on clear strategic goals and corresponding long-term plans utilize this strategy. (Mintzberg)
  • The focus is on making tiny, gradual moves to assess strong coalitions within the company. Since there are different levels of authority, it is never possible to establish expansive objectives, undertake risky actions, and advance together.
