In the midst of escalating tensions with Russia, the US “Doomsday Plane” has been observed flying over Nebraska. Both the United States and the Soviet Union commissioned Doomsday aircraft during the Cold War, when nuclear war appeared a real possibility. They are intended to serve as flying war chambers from which the leaders of the superpowers may issue directives in the event of a nuclear war.
The planes are theoretically capable of surviving a nuclear assault as well as the effects of an electromagnetic pulse while maintaining contact with other global leaders through satellite communication. According to iNews, the US’s National Airborne Operations Center was a retrofitted Boeing E-4B jet dubbed Nightwatch with a variety of defensive characteristics.
According to the US Air Force’s website, “the E-4B is shielded against the effects of electromagnetic pulse and features an electrical system intended to accommodate sophisticated electronics and a broad array of communications equipment.”
“The airborne operations center uses an innovative satellite communications technology to offer global connectivity for senior officials. Shielding against radioactive and thermal impacts, acoustic management, an enhanced technical control facility, and an updated air-conditioning system for cooling electrical components are among the other enhancements.”
The planes can be refueled in the air, and they just need to descend roughly once a week to oil the engine. The plane flew for 4.5 hours on a journey to Chicago during its test flight on Monday. The US government did not react to iNews’ question about whether the training exercise was in response to Russia’s statement on Sunday that nuclear forces had been placed on “special combat duty.” The US is keeping a tight lid on the planes and their movements, as one might anticipate with top-secret nuclear-bomb survivor jets. On Monday, there was no indication that Vice President Joe Biden was on board the plane, which was escorted by two Cobra Ball planes.
According to Russian official media, Russia is developing a new “Doomsday” jet, a military aircraft that may act as a flying command and control center in a calamity such as a nuclear-armed battle. According to state-run news outlet RIA Novosti, which cited a source in the state military-industrial complex, work is ongoing in Voronezh. The new jets are supposed to be upgraded versions of the Ilyushin Il-96-400M airliner, according to Tass, another Russian state-run news site. According to RIA Novosti’s source, Russian troops would acquire at least two of the new aircraft, one of which is currently in construction.
